Popcorn and Junior Mints...

A friend of mine asked me to name my top 10 favorite movies, with an optional explanation.. Thought I would take it a step further and document it here. This list is in no particular order.

1) Forrest Gump
2) The Machinist
3) WALL-E
4) Big Fish
5) The Godfather trilogy
6) Natural Born Killers
7) Darjeeling Limited
8) Up!
9) A Streetcar Named Desire
10)  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Forrest Gump

When asked, "if you could watch only one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be" I always answer, "Forrest Gump." This movie not only has a killer sound track, but its timeless. The aspect of this movie that really attracts me to it, is its focus on love- all love. Love for a mother, love for a best friend, love for a child, love as a crush, love as true love, and trying to hold on to whatever love you have.

This is my favorite scene. Pretty much sums it up. "I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all floatin' around accidental like on a breeze. (thoughtful pause) but i think maybe its both, maybe both happening at the same time." In the movie he is depicted as stupid and dumb, but in reality he's the only one who gets it. My favorite part is "If there's anything you need, I won't be far away." That summed up his relationship with Jenny, whenever she needed something she knew she could count (or use him).

The Machinist

Brilliant movie. The director fills the movie with clues and hidden images to lead you to the truth, but does it in such a way that it doesnt actually give it away. Its cryptic and mysterious. The thoughtfulness that the director puts into the lighting and music and atmosphere. Spectacular.

WALL-E

The first 20 minutes of this movie is brilliant. No dialog, no words, but you understand the story. Amazing animation, amazing story. Also an interesting perspective (and probably accurate) on the fate of the human race.

Big Fish

Beautiful visual. Great love story- not only between the father and mother, but also the love between father and son.

The Godfather trilogy

Classic and timeless. Amazing actors, memorable scenes. Best acting moment of all time is in Godfather III, you can hear and feel Al Pacino's heart breaking.

*SPOILER*

Natural Born Killers

Interesting twist on a love story. Demented. In such a messed up mind as the 2 killers, two people who can kill and have no regard for anyone else's lives are still so in love with each other. "As the god of my world" - says it all...

Darjeeling Limited

Beautiful. visually and emotionally beautiful. Wes Anderson is a genius.

Up!

A beautiful love story told in less than 10 minutes. Thats brilliant.

A Streetcar Named Desire

Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh.. How could this not be on the list?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Is it better to have loved and lost or never have loved at all?

I need to go home and watch these and devote an entry to each movie.
